How to Use the Butterfly Click Test

The butterfly click test counts every click inside the box and divides by the time. The timer starts on your first click.

  1. Pick a time. Choose how long the test runs.
  2. Start clicking. Your first click starts the timer.
  3. Keep going. Click until the time runs out.
  4. Check your CPS. Your score and best score are shown.

Technique Tips

Use your index and middle fingers, and keep the taps light.

Typical Scores

CPSWhat it means
Under 6Relaxed clicking. Totally normal.
6 to 8Average. Most people land here.
8 to 11Fast. You are probably jitter clicking or just quick.
11 to 15Very fast. Jitter or butterfly territory.
15+Elite. Butterfly or drag clicking.

Is This Safe for My Mouse?

Fast clicking won't break a healthy mouse, but it wears switches faster. If clicks start doubling, check with the double click test.

Next Step

Compare with the drag click test.

How to Butterfly Click

  1. Hold the mouse with your thumb and ring finger so your index and middle fingers are free.
  2. Place both fingers on the left mouse button.
  3. Tap them one after the other, quickly and lightly, like drumming on a table.
  4. Keep your wrist relaxed. The motion comes from your fingers, not your arm.
  5. Start slow and build up speed over several sessions.

Butterfly Clicking and Server Rules

Because butterfly clicking can reach 15 to 20 CPS or more, some Minecraft servers and anti-cheat systems flag it. Some servers set a CPS limit, often around 15 to 20. Others ban double-clicking mice and techniques that create two clicks per press. Always read a server's rules before using it in competitive play.

Why Your Butterfly Clicks Don't All Register

Many mice have a debounce time that ignores clicks that come too close together. With butterfly clicking, your two fingers can hit the button within a few milliseconds, and the mouse may merge them into one click. Lowering the debounce in your mouse software can help. Some mice simply can't butterfly click well, and that's a design choice, not a fault.

Butterfly Clicking Step by Step for Beginners

If you've never butterfly clicked, start slowly. Place your index finger near the front of the left button and your middle finger just behind it. Tap index, then middle, then index, in a steady rhythm. Count "one-two, one-two" out loud if it helps. After a minute, speed up a little. Most beginners reach 10 CPS in the first session and 14 or more within a week of short practice.

Don't press harder to go faster. Light taps are quicker and much easier on your fingers and your mouse. If your fingers start to ache, take a break. Speed comes from relaxed, consistent rhythm.

Which Mice Work Best for Butterfly Clicking?

Mice with a low debounce time and a light, crisp click are easiest. Wide left buttons give your two fingers room to work. Some popular budget gaming mice are known for being good at butterfly clicking because their debounce is very low. Mice with optical switches can also work well, but some brands add extra filtering. If your clicks aren't registering, see whether your software lets you lower debounce, and check with the double click test that lowering it doesn't cause chatter on normal clicks.

Butterfly Click Test FAQ Extras

Can I butterfly click on a laptop touchpad? Not really. Touchpads aren't built for it and often merge fast taps.

Is butterfly clicking a double-click macro? No. Every click comes from a real finger press.

Tracking Your Butterfly Progress

Write down your best and middle scores each day for a week. Most people gain several CPS in the first few days as their rhythm settles.

Safety Note

Butterfly clicking is gentle, but take breaks during long sessions.
