How to Use the Keyboard Latency Test
This test measures the part of keyboard lag your browser can see: from the moment the key event arrives to the next drawn frame. It also shows how long each press was held, which helps spot keys that release too quickly or bounce. Compare wired vs wireless, or gaming mode on vs off.
- Click the page. So it receives keys.
- Tap a key 20+ times. Any key works.
- Read the median. It is more reliable than a single value.
- Compare. Change keyboard, cable or mode and test again.
What Is Measured (and What Isn't)
Browsers can't see the delay inside the keyboard itself (scan rate and debounce). This test shows key event to screen in the browser, which depends on your refresh rate and system load. A 60 Hz screen adds up to 16.7 ms on its own.
Typical Results
| Setup | Key to frame (median) |
|---|---|
| 240 Hz screen | about 4–8 ms |
| 144 Hz screen | about 7–12 ms |
| 60 Hz screen | about 16–30 ms |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my latency high?
A 60 Hz screen, a busy PC or Bluetooth all add delay.
Does polling rate matter?
Yes, a 1000 Hz keyboard can send keys sooner than a 125 Hz one.
What is hold time?
How long the key was held down. Very short holds can mean bouncing.
Is there one for mice?
Yes, the mouse latency test.
