How to Use the Mouse Input Test

This input test shows exactly what the page sees, field by field. It's handy for checking button numbers, scroll deltas, pointer type and whether your browser supports raw pointer updates.

  1. Move the mouse. Watch clientX, clientY and movementX/Y update.
  2. Click buttons. See the button and buttons values for each press.
  3. Scroll. Check deltaY and deltaMode (0 = pixels, 1 = lines).

What a Browser Can See

Buttons arrive as numbers 0 to 4. The wheel sends deltas. Movement includes position and relative movement. Pointer type tells you mouse, pen or touch. The page can't see DPI, battery or firmware.

What This Test Shows

The mouse input test shows every event your browser receives from the mouse: button presses and releases, wheel steps and movement. It's a simple way to see exactly what your mouse sends, which is useful when a button seems to do the wrong thing or when you want to check a macro or remap.

EventWhat triggers it
mousedown / mouseupPressing and releasing a button
button 0, 1, 2Left, middle and right buttons
button 3, 4Back and forward side buttons
wheelEach scroll step, with its direction
mousemoveAny movement of the mouse

Common Uses

  • Check that side buttons send Back and Forward, not a keyboard key.
  • Confirm that a remapped button sends what you set in your mouse software.
  • See whether one press creates two events, which points to a double-click fault.
  • Check tilt-wheel or extra buttons on MMO mice.

Tips

Close your mouse software if events look strange, because some tools send keyboard presses instead of mouse buttons. If a button shows nothing at all, it may be bound to a feature that the browser can't see, like a DPI switch.
