How to Use the Mic Test
Our online mic test listens to your microphone through the browser and shows the sound as a moving waveform and a level meter. If the bar moves when you talk, your mic works. The playback button lets you check the quality too: muffled, noisy, too quiet or clipping. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. Everything runs in your browser and stops as soon as you close the tab.
- Press Start mic test. Your browser asks for permission. Click Allow.
- Speak or clap. The level bar and waveform should move with your voice.
- Pick another mic. If nothing moves, choose a different device from the list.
- Record and play back. Record 5 seconds and listen to how you really sound.
Why Is My Microphone Not Working?
- Permission blocked. Click the lock or camera icon in the address bar and allow the microphone for this site.
- Wrong device. Laptops often have two or three inputs. Pick your headset or USB mic in the list above.
- Muted. Check the mute switch on the headset cable, the mic button on the keyboard and the mute icon in Windows or macOS.
- Another app has it. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS and press Start again.
- Privacy setting. On Windows open Settings › Privacy › Microphone and turn on "Let apps use your microphone".
How to Read the Results
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Level moves with your voice | The microphone works. |
| Level stays at 0% | No signal. Check mute, the device and permissions. |
| Peak near 0 dBFS, "Clipping" | Too loud. Lower the input volume or move back. |
| Bar never passes 20% | Too quiet. Raise the input level or move closer. |
| Bar moves when silent | Background noise or hum. Try another USB port or turn off noise sources. |
How to Make Your Mic Sound Better
- Keep the mic a hand-width (10–15 cm) from your mouth and slightly to the side to avoid pops.
- Set the input level so normal speech peaks around 60–80% on the bar.
- Use a soft room. Curtains and a carpet cut echo far more than any software.
- Turn on noise suppression in Discord or Teams only if your room is noisy, because it can make your voice sound thin.
