How to Use the Accelerometer Test
The accelerometer measures movement and gravity on three axes. It powers step counting, shake gestures and screen rotation. This test shows the raw X, Y and Z values, the motion without gravity, the peak and how often the sensor reports.
- Open on your phone. Tap Start sensors.
- Lay it flat. Z is about 9.8, X and Y about 0.
- Stand it up. Y should become about 9.8.
- Shake it. Motion and peak should jump.
Expected Readings
| Position | X | Y | Z |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat on table | 0 | 0 | ≈ 9.8 |
| Standing upright | 0 | ≈ 9.8 | 0 |
| On its side | ≈ 9.8 | 0 | 0 |

Uses for the Readings
- Check a phone with a broken auto-rotate.
- Use the bubble level to check a shelf.
- Test the sensors before buying a used phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Z 9.8 and not 0?

What is sensor rate?
How often the sensor reports. 60 Hz or more is typical.
Why no readings on desktop?
Desktops don't have accelerometers.
Is it free?
Yes.
