How to Use the Tone Generator
This tone generator makes pure tones in your browser with the Web Audio API. Use it to test speakers and headphones, find a rattle in your car or room, tune an instrument to a reference note, or check how high you can hear. The slider is logarithmic, so low and high notes are equally easy to reach.
- Pick a frequency. Drag the slider, type a number or press a preset.
- Choose a waveform. Sine is the purest. Square and sawtooth sound buzzier.
- Press Play. Start quietly and raise the volume slowly.
- Adjust live. Change frequency, volume and balance while it plays.
Popular Frequencies and What They Are For
| Frequency | Use |
|---|---|
| 20–60 Hz | Subwoofer and deep bass checks, finding rattles |
| 100 Hz | Bass check for small speakers |
| 440 Hz | A4, the standard tuning note |
| 1 kHz | Reference tone for audio levels |
| 8 kHz | Most adults hear this easily |
| 15–17.4 kHz | High tones that many adults can no longer hear |
Waveforms Explained
- Sine: one pure frequency, best for testing.
- Square: hollow and buzzy, full of odd harmonics.
- Sawtooth: bright and harsh, full of harmonics.
- Triangle: softer than square, close to a sine.
Stay Safe
High and loud tones are tiring. Keep the volume low, especially with headphones, and stop if you feel discomfort or ringing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it to tune an instrument?
Yes, play 440 Hz for A4. For full tuning, the guitar tuner listens and shows how sharp or flat you are.
Why can't I hear very high tones?
Hearing above about 15 kHz fades with age, and many speakers can't play them either.
Can it hurt my speakers?
Loud, long low tones can. Keep the volume moderate.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. Turn off silent mode on iPhone first.
