How to Use the Keyboard Ghosting Test

Cheap keyboards can only register a few keys at once, and some combinations drop keys (ghosting). In games, that means you can't run, strafe, jump and crouch at the same time. This test shows every key you are holding, the most you have held at once and an estimate of your rollover.

  1. Click on the page. So it receives your keys.
  2. Hold keys together. Start with W + A + Shift + Space.
  3. Add more keys. Watch the count rise.
  4. Try the combos. A missing key means ghosting.

What Is Ghosting and Rollover?

TermMeaning
GhostingA key you press doesn't register (or a phantom key appears) while others are held
2KROOnly 2 keys guaranteed at once
6KRO6 keys plus modifiers, common over USB
NKROEvery key at once, best for gaming

Laptop Keyboards

Laptop keyboards usually manage only 2–4 keys in some combinations. That is a limit of the wiring, not a fault.

Can I Fix Ghosting?

  • Turn on NKRO mode if your keyboard has it (often Fn + a key).
  • Try a different USB port, because some modes only work over USB.
  • Change game keybinds to combos that work.
  • Upgrade to a keyboard with full NKRO.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many keys should I get?

At least 6 for gaming. NKRO keyboards show every key.

Why do only 3 keys show?

Your keyboard has limited rollover for that combo.

Does it detect phantom keys?

Yes, unexpected keys appear in the list.

Does the Windows key count?

Some keys are taken by the OS and may not show.
