Monitor Test

Eight test patterns in one place. Click a pattern, go full screen, and check your display in a few minutes.

How to Use the Monitor Test

This monitor test gives you the classic calibration patterns: gradients for banding, black and white levels, a gamma chart, a contrast ramp, sharpness lines and text, a uniformity screen and a viewing angle check. Use it after buying a new monitor or before you calibrate.

  1. Pick a pattern. Each one has a short tip above it.
  2. Go full screen. For the most honest result.
  3. Adjust your monitor. Use brightness, contrast and gamma in the monitor menu.
  4. Recheck. Go through every pattern once more.

Black Level Looks Wrong?

If the first 10–20 squares are invisible, your graphics card may be sending limited range (16–235) to a monitor that expects full range (0–255). Set the output dynamic range to Full in the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel control panel.

Do I Need a Calibrator?

For photo and video work, a hardware calibrator is best. For gaming and everyday use, these patterns get you most of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calibrate my monitor with this?

You can get brightness, contrast and gamma close. Colour accuracy needs a hardware calibrator.

What gamma should I use?

2.2 for most screens and content.

Why do I see bands in the gradient?

Your panel or GPU uses fewer colours, or a colour profile is causing banding.

Does it work on TVs and phones?

Yes.
