How to Use the Webcam Test

This webcam test opens your camera in the browser and shows what it actually delivers, not just what the box says. You can request HD, Full HD or 4K and see the resolution your camera really gives, plus a live frame-rate counter. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. Everything runs in your browser and stops as soon as you close the tab.

  1. Press Start camera. Allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. Check the picture. Look at focus, colour and brightness in the preview.
  3. Read the numbers. Resolution, frame rate and megapixels update live.
  4. Switch or snap. Pick another camera or resolution, or save a snapshot.

Why Is My Webcam Not Working?

  • Permission denied. Allow the camera in the address bar, then reload.
  • Camera in use. Only one app can use most webcams at once. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype or OBS.
  • Privacy shutter or key. Many laptops have a sliding cover or an F-key that turns the camera off.
  • Windows privacy. Settings › Privacy › Camera must allow apps and desktop apps.
  • Driver. In Device Manager, uninstall the camera and restart to reinstall it.

What Resolution and Frame Rate Should I Get?

CameraTypical result
Older laptop640×480 or 1280×720, 15–30 fps
Modern laptop1280×720 or 1920×1080, 30 fps
USB webcam (1080p)1920×1080 at 30 fps, 60 fps on some
4K webcam3840×2160 at 30 fps

If the frame rate is low, add light. Most webcams slow down in dim rooms to get a brighter picture.

Tips for a Better Picture

  • Face a window or lamp, never sit with a bright window behind you.
  • Put the camera at eye level.
  • Wipe the lens with a soft cloth.
  • Use 1080p only if your internet upload can keep up during calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my video recorded?

No. The picture is shown only on your screen and nothing is saved unless you take a snapshot and download it.

Why is the image mirrored?

Many apps mirror the preview so it feels like a mirror. Others see you the normal way. Use Mirror on/off to switch.

Can I test an external webcam?

Yes. Plug it in, press Start and pick it from the Camera list.

Why is my frame rate lower than 30 fps?

Low light, a USB 2.0 port or a busy CPU. Add light first.
