Gamepad Tester

Plug in your controller and press any button. Every button, stick and trigger lights up on the live diagram.

How to Use the Gamepad Tester

This gamepad tester reads your controller through the browser's Gamepad API. It shows a live controller diagram, both sticks with their trails and a dead zone circle, analog trigger values, every raw axis, and a button checklist. Press Measure stick drift and leave the sticks alone for five seconds to get a drift reading and a suggested dead zone. The rumble buttons test the vibration motors.

  1. Connect. Plug in or pair your controller.
  2. Press a button. Browsers only show a controller after a button press.
  3. Test everything. Press each button and pull each trigger.
  4. Check the sticks. Let go of the sticks. Values should return to about 0.

How to Spot Stick Drift

With the sticks untouched, axis values should be close to 0.000. Steady values between about 0.05 and 0.2 suggest drift. Clean around the stick, recalibrate, or adjust the dead zone in your game.

Dead zoneSmall area ignored around the centre
DriftStick reporting movement at rest
Standard mappingThe browser's common button layout

Summary

Connect, press a button, and check everything: sticks at rest and in full circles, triggers through their whole range, and every button once. If all looks right here, the problem lies in the game. If not, recalibrate, clean, update firmware, and consider repair. It's the quickest way to know where a controller problem really is.

Quick Tip

Tip: test a new controller before you remove its packaging tags, so returns are easy if a stick drifts or a button sticks. Second-hand buyers should test every button and both sticks before paying. Come back and test again any time something feels different, because catching small changes early is always easier than fixing big ones later.

What Is a Gamepad Tester?

A gamepad tester shows every button, trigger and stick on your controller in real time. It uses the browser's Gamepad API, so it works with Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and most generic USB or Bluetooth controllers without installing anything.

How to Use It

  1. Connect your controller with USB or Bluetooth.
  2. Press any button so the browser detects it.
  3. Press each button and watch it light up.
  4. Move both sticks in full circles and check the values reach the edges.
  5. Pull the triggers slowly and check they go from 0 to 1 smoothly.

What to Check

  • Stick drift: with the sticks untouched, both axes should sit near 0. Values above about 0.1 mean drift.
  • Dead zones: small movements should register.
  • Full range: stick circles should reach close to 1 in every direction.
  • Triggers: smooth travel without jumps.
  • Buttons: each one lights once per press, never stuck.

Fixing Stick Drift

Drift is the most common controller fault. Try these fixes in order: recalibrate in your system or Steam settings, increase the dead zone in your game, blow compressed air around the stick base, and update the controller firmware. If drift is still there, the stick module is worn and may need replacing or a warranty claim.

Supported Controllers

ControllerConnection
Xbox One / SeriesUSB, Bluetooth
PlayStation 4 / 5USB, Bluetooth
Nintendo Switch ProUSB, Bluetooth (browser support varies)
Generic USB padsUSB

Some controllers only appear after you press a button. If yours doesn't show up, try another browser or USB cable.

Limitations

Browsers don't support everything. Rumble testing works only in some browsers. Gyro, touchpads and extra paddles are usually not visible. Button names can differ between controllers because the browser uses a standard layout.

How the Gamepad API Works

When you press a button on a controller, your operating system turns it into a standard input. The browser's Gamepad API reads that input many times per second and gives each button and axis a number. Buttons go from 0 (released) to 1 (pressed). Triggers go smoothly from 0 to 1 as you pull them. Sticks have two axes each, from -1 to 1, for left/right and up/down. This tester simply draws those numbers so you can see them.

Because the browser only starts sharing controller data after you press a button, the page will say "press any button" until you do. This is a privacy feature, so sites can't silently detect controllers.

Popular Controller Tests

  • Xbox controller test: check the A, B, X, Y buttons, bumpers, triggers, both sticks and the D-pad. The Xbox button itself is usually reserved by the system.
  • PS5 / DualSense test: the face buttons appear as Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle in the standard layout. The touchpad click usually shows as a button, but touch position doesn't.
  • PS4 / DualShock 4 test: works over USB and Bluetooth in most browsers.
  • Switch Pro controller test: works in Chromium browsers, though button labels may be swapped (A/B and X/Y).
  • Generic and retro pads: many appear with a non-standard layout, so buttons may be numbered instead of named.

When to Test Your Controller

  • After buying a new or second-hand controller.
  • When a game ignores a button or a character walks on their own.
  • Before and after cleaning or repairing a stick.
  • After a firmware update.
  • When switching between wired and Bluetooth.

Expert Tips

  • Test sticks with slow, full circles. Fast circles hide dead spots.
  • Watch the resting value for 30 seconds. Drift often appears after the stick warms up.
  • Compare both sticks. If only one drifts, it's the module, not the software.
  • Try a different cable. Many "broken" USB controllers are just a bad cable.
  • Check triggers at half pull. A jumpy reading in the middle suggests a worn sensor.

Summary

A gamepad tester is the fastest way to find out whether a controller problem is hardware or software. If every button and axis looks right here, the issue is in the game or its settings. If something is wrong here, it's the controller. For PC mice and keyboards, use the mouse tester and keyboard tester.

Why Is a Gamepad Tester Important?

Controllers take a lot of wear. Sticks get pushed thousands of times per session, and buttons get mashed. Problems often start small: a stick that drifts slightly, or a button that sometimes doesn't register. In games, these feel like bad luck or lag. A tester shows exactly what the controller is sending, so you can tell whether the problem is the hardware, the connection or the game. It also helps when buying second-hand, because you can check everything before you pay.

Types of Gamepad Testers

There are a few ways to test a controller. Browser-based testers like this one need nothing installed and work on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Desktop apps and Steam's controller settings offer calibration and remapping but need installing. Console menus can test official controllers, but only on that console. For quick checks, a browser tester is usually the fastest.

SticksSlow full circlesSmooth circle, reaches the edge

TriggersSlow pullSmooth 0 to 1

Common Mistakes

  • Testing with a low battery, which causes dropouts.
  • Testing through a cheap USB hub.
  • Mistaking a game's dead zone setting for a hardware fault.
  • Forgetting to press a button first, so the browser never shows the controller.

Advantages and Limits of Online Testing

Online testers are quick, free and safe: nothing to install, and the page can't change your controller's settings. They work across operating systems and are perfect for checking second-hand controllers. The main limits come from the browser. Rumble, gyro, touchpad position, battery level and extra paddles are often hidden. Button names may not match your controller's labels because browsers use a standard layout. For those features, use the controller maker's app or Steam's controller settings.

Testing Stick Drift Properly

  1. Put the controller on a flat surface.
  2. Don't touch the sticks for 30 seconds.
  3. Watch the axis values for both sticks.
  4. Gently flick each stick and let it spring back, then check where it settles.

A healthy stick settles back near 0.00 every time. Values that stay at 0.05 to 0.1 are minor and usually hidden by game dead zones. Values above about 0.15, or values that slowly change while the stick is still, are drift. Recalibrate first, then clean, then consider repair.

Gamepad Tester FAQ Extras

Why does my controller show up twice? Some controllers appear once for each connection type, or once as a generic device.

Can I test two controllers at once? Yes, each one gets its own panel.

Does this work on a phone? Many Android browsers support controllers over Bluetooth.

Wired vs Bluetooth Controllers

Wired connections are the most reliable for testing because they rule out signal and battery problems. If a controller works perfectly wired but has problems over Bluetooth, the issue is the wireless connection: try re-pairing it, moving closer, or updating Bluetooth drivers. Bluetooth also adds a little input delay, which some players notice in fast games. For competitive play, wired or a dedicated 2.4 GHz adapter is usually best.
