Press Start meter and allow microphone access
Readings are estimates: phone and laptop mics are not calibrated sound level meters.
How to Use the Decibel Meter
This online sound level meter turns your microphone signal into an estimated decibel reading. It is a good guide to compare rooms, check if a fan is louder than before or see how noisy your office is. Phone and laptop microphones are not calibrated, so use the offset to match a real meter if you have one. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. Everything runs in your browser and stops as soon as you close the tab.
- Press Start meter. Allow microphone access.
- Hold still. Keep the device in one place and away from your mouth.
- Read the levels. Now, minimum, average and maximum update live.
- Calibrate (optional). Adjust the offset to match a known sound meter.
Common Noise Levels
| dB | Sounds like |
|---|---|
| 30 | Whisper, quiet bedroom |
| 40–50 | Quiet office, fridge hum |
| 60 | Normal conversation |
| 70 | Vacuum cleaner, busy street |
| 85 | Heavy traffic, risk with long exposure |
| 100+ | Concert, power tools: wear protection |
How Accurate Is a Browser Decibel Meter?
Expect a few dB of error. Microphones and their automatic gain control differ, so we turn off noise suppression and gain where the browser lets us. For work safety or legal readings, use a certified sound level meter.
Measure Microphone Noise Floor
Put the meter in a silent room and read the minimum. That is roughly your microphone's noise floor. A lower number means a quieter mic and cleaner recordings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this decibel meter accurate?
It gives a good estimate for comparing sounds. It is not a calibrated instrument.
What is a safe noise level?
Under 70 dB is fine all day. Long exposure above 85 dB can damage hearing.
Why does it read higher on my phone?
Different mics have different sensitivity. Use the calibration offset.
Does it record audio?
No. It only measures the level and nothing leaves your device.
