How to Butterfly Click

Learn how to butterfly click step by step, how fast it is, whether it is allowed, and how to practise with a CPS test.

By the AllMouseTester team · Updated 3 November 2026

Butterfly clicking uses two fingers on one button. Done right, it can double your clicks per second.

How to Do It

  • Rest your index and middle fingers on the left button.
  • Tap them one after the other, like drumming.
  • Keep the taps light and fast. Don't press hard.
  • Practise in short bursts on the butterfly click test.

How Fast Is It?

Most people reach 15 to 20 CPS with practice. Some mice can't register clicks that fast, especially with high debounce.

Is It Allowed?

Some servers and games ban techniques that go above a CPS limit. Check the rules before using it competitively.

Final Thoughts

Remember that speed isn't everything. In PvP, accurate hits at a steady pace often beat wild, fast clicking. Use butterfly clicking when it helps, and practise aiming while you do it.

Try It Now

Ready to try? Open the butterfly click test and do three 5 second rounds. Note your middle score and come back tomorrow to beat it.

One Last Tip

Track your progress for two weeks and you'll be surprised how quickly your scores climb with short daily sessions.

A 7-Day Butterfly Clicking Practice Plan

DayFocusSession
1Learn the finger position, two fingers on the left button5 minutes, slow and even
2Alternate fingers in a steady rhythm3 rounds of 10 seconds
3Relax your wrist and shoulder3 rounds of 10 seconds
4Push for speed on short bursts5 rounds of 5 seconds
5Hold your speed for longer2 rounds of 30 seconds
6Mix bursts and restsFree practice, 10 minutes
7Measure your progressBest of 3 on the butterfly test

Short sessions work better than long ones. Your fingers learn the rhythm faster when they're fresh, and you're less likely to strain your hand.

Is Butterfly Clicking Allowed?

It depends on where you play. Many Minecraft servers cap CPS at 15 to 20, and butterfly clicking can go past that, which may get you flagged. Some servers ban it completely. Always check the server rules first. In single-player games and click tests, there are no limits.

Will It Damage My Mouse?

Butterfly clicking can register double clicks on mice with a very low debounce time, and it puts extra wear on the left switch. If you notice extra clicks you didn't mean to make, check the button on the double click test. Practise on a mouse you don't mind wearing out.

Quick Summary

  • Use two fingers on the left button and alternate them.
  • Practise in short sessions of a few minutes.
  • Keep your wrist and shoulder relaxed.
  • Check server rules, because many cap or ban high CPS.
  • Watch for extra clicks, which can mean your mouse is wearing out.

Why Butterfly Clicking Is Faster

With normal clicking, one finger has to press and release before it can press again. There's a limit to how fast a single finger can do that, usually around 6 to 9 times per second. With butterfly clicking, two fingers take turns. While one is releasing, the other is pressing. That roughly doubles your potential speed, which is why butterfly clicking often reaches 15 to 20 CPS or more.

Detailed Technique

  1. Hold the mouse with your thumb on the left side and your ring and little fingers on the right.
  2. Place your index finger on the front half of the left button and your middle finger on the back half.
  3. Raise both fingers slightly so they hover just above the button.
  4. Tap index, then middle, alternating, as if drumming quickly on a table.
  5. Keep the movement in your fingers, not your wrist or arm.
  6. Start at a comfortable speed and build up over time.

Some people prefer to use their index finger on the left button and middle finger on the same button but angled. Experiment to find what feels best.

Common Problems

  • Clicks don't all register: your mouse's debounce is merging clicks. Lower debounce if possible.
  • Mouse moves while clicking: grip harder with your thumb and ring finger.
  • Fingers out of sync: slow down and focus on rhythm.
  • Fingers tire quickly: tap lighter.

Practice Routine

Spend five minutes a day practising. Start with three 5 second tests on the butterfly click test, rest, then three 10 second tests. Track your middle score. Most people see big improvements in the first week. Once you can reach your target speed consistently, practise using it in game while also aiming.

Is Butterfly Clicking Allowed?

It depends on where you play. Many Minecraft servers allow it, some don't, and some set a CPS limit. Some ban double-click mice and techniques that produce two clicks per press. Butterfly clicking produces one click per finger press, but because it's fast, it can trigger anti-cheat systems on strict servers. Check the rules before using it competitively.

Butterfly Clicking Speed Goals

LevelCPS
Beginner10 to 12
Intermediate13 to 16
Advanced17 to 20
Expert20+

Most people reach intermediate within a couple of weeks of short daily practice. Beyond that, gains come slower, and your mouse's debounce often becomes the limit.

Butterfly Clicking and Your Mouse

Fast two-finger clicking puts extra wear on the left switch. Keep an eye on it with the double click test. If you butterfly click a lot, a mouse with optical switches can last longer.

Common Questions

Why is my butterfly CPS lower than expected? Usually debounce merging clicks, or fingers out of rhythm.

Should I butterfly click with my right hand only? Use your dominant hand on the mouse, whichever it is.

Does grip matter? A claw grip helps keep the mouse steady while both fingers tap.

Summary

Butterfly clicking is easy to learn, gentle on your hand and very fast. Practise a few minutes a day on the butterfly click test, and check server rules before using it competitively.

Butterfly Clicking on Different Mice

Some mice have one-piece shells where the buttons are stiff near the back, making the middle finger's taps harder to register. Mice with separate, evenly weighted buttons work better. Try placing your fingers a little further forward if back taps don't register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is butterfly clicking bad for my mouse?

It wears switches faster than normal clicking.

Why do my butterfly clicks not register?

Your mouse's debounce time may be filtering them.

Butterfly or jitter?

Butterfly is usually faster. Jitter is easier to control.
